We CAN-Move is a new exercise referral programme designed specifically for adults (16 years plus) who have been affected by cancer. The programme provides cancer patients with opportunities to be active including access to personalised exercise programmes delivered by experts in exercise and wellbeing.
Being physically active after a cancer diagnosis is linked to better cancer outcomes for several cancers, it can also help to improve post-operative outcomes and prevent cancer recurrence.
There are many benefits to becoming more active during and after cancer treatment, including:
- Reduced tiredness
- Improved flexibility and pain relief
- Improved mood and quality of life
- Improved bone health and a reduction in the risk of osteoporosis
- Helps to achieve and maintain a healthy weight
There are many ways to achieve these benefits, including:
- Everyday activities at home
- Gym sessions
- Pilates/yoga classes
We CAN-Move has been developed by Northamptonshire Sport in collaboration with the Macmillan Cancer Recovery Package, Public Health Northamptonshire and local health and fitness providers. The programme is based on supporting individuals to become active in an activity that is right for them. This means ensuring there is sufficient access to a range of trusted resources and activities locally and not just cancer specific exercise sessions. We CAN-Move therefore provides three options:
Firstly, the self-management route, encouraging cancer patients just to 'move more' as part of their everyday life, such as walking, gardening, etc., To support with this a range of online resources and videos have been developed specifically for people living with cancer, see our dedicated Cancer support page
Secondly, self-referral and signposting to appropriate community led structured activities, such as community led Health Walks, Walking Sports, Swimming etc. Many of these opportunities can be found on the Northamptonshire Sport website. We are also running 'Stretch to the Future' yoga classes available at two locations (Ironstone Wellbeing Centre, Kettering and The OM Studio, Northampton) and also live online
Thirdly, for those who prefer, or need one to one support there is the referral route to the Cancer Exercise Referral Programme which is currently being run at three different health and fitness providers:
- Reach for Health in Daventry;
- Fitness Without Boundaries in Northampton;
- Corby Health & Fitness who operate Corby East Midlands International Swimming Pool and Lodge Park Sports Centre.
Patients will be under the supervision of a Cancer Rehab Exercise Professional who will provide an individualised exercise programme in a friendly and supportive environment to maximise physical recovery.
This is a referral-based scheme and as such the individual can only join the programme with their 'Cancer Treatment Summary' signed by a cancer clinical nurse specialist, oncology consultant, GP, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, surgeon or physician by completing a Referral Form
