Partnership Working Helps Southbrook Residents Celebrate Community Spirit With Big Thank You Event

Funding acquired by Northamptonshire Sport has provided residents of the Southbrook Estate in Daventry with an opportunity to keep the area clean, get active and celebrate community spirit.
The £1000 received from the Virgin Media O2 Big Thank You fund was used to purchase litter picking equipment for the Southbrook Community Centre who are developing a group to regularly tidy up rubbish found in the area.
It also allowed the community to celebrate the positive spirit that has got us through the past 18 months. Whether it was neighbours who checked that we were okay, delivery drivers who kept food on shelves, volunteers who helped deliver the vaccine roll out, or kids for adapting to homeschooling – the community recognised that we all had somebody to say thank you to.
The celebrations were a fun filled day; starting with a community litter pick, followed by a picnic on the Fishponds grassed area and rounded off with families participating in various sporting activities provided by local sports clubs and groups. With the date also marking the first day of the Tokyo Olympics it was great to see residents taking part in sporting endeavours, particularly after a stop-start year for lots of Daventry based sports clubs. Children and families enjoyed all sorts of activities from bowls to tennis and athletics, to a dance demonstration by Expressions Dance.
Work was carried out during the event to consult with residents to find out what activities people would like to do, so they could be signposted to existing opportunities and plans put in place to develop new sessions if required based on that feedback.
This was all organised by a number of partners who make up the Southbrook Steering Group including Futures Housing who coordinate it, Daventry Town Council, West Northamptonshire Council, Daventry Volunteer Centre, Bromford Housing, Orbit Housing Northamptonshire Children's Trust, the Southbrook Community Centre, DSLV and Northamptonshire Sport.
The Big Thank You event was well attended by local residents, Town Councillors Mike Arnold, Malcolm Ogle and Janet Matthews, PCSOs Stephen Sangster and Kirsten Bates, DTC Town Ranger Charlotte Jones and the Mayor of Daventry Cllr Karen Tweedale who remarked afterwards:
"It was such a pleasure joining in this fun family event. It was a great day with lots of participants and smiling faces."
The project forms part of Northamptonshire Sport's Asset Based Community Development work in the area to help get people living there more active. Physical Activity Development Officer, Graeme Wilson who is involved in this as part of his role said:
"It was great to see the local community engaging in this project and hearing their views on physical activity. I'm extremely grateful to all of the organisations who helped develop the event, promote it to residents and then make it happen including the fantastic activity providers! Equally to Virgin Media O2 for providing us with the funding! I hope that this is the first of many initiatives we can all work together on with residents at the heart of it, so we can provide them with all the benefits that physical activity can bring!"
