University of Northampton survey aims to get Delapré visitors ‘walking the walk’

The University of Northampton has teamed up with Northamptonshire Sport and Delapré Abbey to design and install a directional walking route around the Abbey's wood, located in Northampton.

The directional signposts contain maps and walking distances and times to help people navigate their way around a set walking route. The signs also give walkers more confidence that going for a walk is safe as they know where they are and how far they have walked at regular intervals.

To determine whether the Delapré signposts are useful, members of the public will be asked to complete a simple survey to share their opinion on walking and directional signposts. The survey – which opens today and runs for the next month – asks for people's opinions about how they plan a walk, whether they explore new paths and what type of routes they tend to choose.

The signposts are expected to be installed and revealed in September.

Dr Declan Ryan, from the University's Sports Science team who is leading on the survey said:

"For many of us, especially during the restrictions of lockdown, going for a walk is a great way of getting some fresh air in our lungs, stretching our legs or just getting out of the house. However, not everyone is as confident when walking, especially in new locations".

"Working with Northamptonshire Sport and Delapré Abbey, we want to make Northamptonshire More Active More Often; helping people get up and go for a walk is part of this. We look forward to reading people's views on these signposts in our survey, whether they walk often, sometimes, or are just considering starting our 'new normal' on a new foot."

The information obtained from this study will be used for better understanding how signposted walking routes can support community connection to green space, physical activity participation, and well-being benefits. We hope to use the findings as evidence to support the installation of more signposted walking routes across Northampton and the wider county.
