I love sport. I always have done & I always will do. I have played various sports at differing levels, I travel up and down the country and across the globe to watch sporting events, and now in my role with Northamptonshire Sport I am lucky enough organise and deliver sporting events for school children across the Northampton area. All in all, I'd say that my life is one that is governed by sport, and that suits me just fine.
I have been working for Northamptonshire Sport for just over 4 months now, and in that time I have delivered a wide range of sporting activities for children aged 6-16. I have seen the positive impact that sports can have upon a young person, both in physical and social ways. As well as being astounded at the physical prowess of young gymnasts, I have seen young boys & girls so nervous at the start of a competition they can hardly talk that by the end of the session you cannot keep quiet! I have seen teachers ensure that the sporting values by which the games are played are upheld, and young adults reacting positively to sports leadership roles. My overall experience of working in the school sporting environment has been overwhelmingly positive & has helped to reinforce my love of sports.
Outside of work, sport has had a really strong positive impact upon my life. It has enabled me to make lifelong friends, stay physically active & share some amazing moments with family members both as a player & a spectator. The sporting values of hard work and fair play are ones that I associate with very closely, and I try and apply these in all aspects of my life. Sport can also mean a wide range of things to different people. For some, it is a sense of belonging and teamwork that they enjoy. For others it is simply a great way of staying fit whilst having fun. And this means that there is a place in sport for everyone, regardless of ability or disability and this is another thing I love about sport.
I really believe that sport matters. We watch it, we play it, and we talk about it. And not just elite sport. The Northamptonshire Sport office on a Monday morning is often full of stories from our amateur games, our friendly rounds of golf and any other physical activity (or not as the case maybe) we have participated in over the weekend. And as far as I am concerned, long may that continue!
