Volunteers' Week takes place on the 1-7 of June every year and it is a big opportunity to appreciate and say thank you and celebrate volunteering in all its diversity. Volunteers' Week is a chance to celebrate and say thank you to all the millions of volunteers and the fantastic contribution they contribute to sport across the UK and particularly in Northamptonshire.
The estimated value per year of volunteers helping UK charities is £22.6 billion. Sport is the single biggest sector of volunteering in the UK. More than one fifth of the 15 million people who volunteer regularly spend their time volunteering in sport – 3.2 million people in total.
A volunteer is a person who expresses a willingness to undertake a service and does not get a prize or get paid for the volunteering hours. The majority of our volunteers are the heart of many sport and activity programmes. People tend to volunteer for various reasons. Some want to meet new people and gain new experiences whilst others want to support their local community. Some engage in volunteering to gain employability skills and gain work experience.
The type of organization and the support the volunteer receives will play a big part in how the volunteer feels and if they willing to come back. Also what type of activities the volunteer engages in, and the experience they have whilst volunteering are key factors in keeping the volunteer motivated.
Northamptonshire Sport is committed to supporting the local volunteer workforce and recognising the valuable contribute they provide to sport locally. We would also like to support local clubs, organisation and communities provide the right support to recruit and retain volunteers so that they continue provide local sport and physical activity opportunities.
