Kettering Mum Urges Northamptonshire To Push The Boat Out

A Kettering mum insists "Sailing is the perfect activity for the whole family to be involved in" as a month of free RYA Push The Boat Out 'try sailing' events launches across Northamptonshire next weekend (4-6 May).

Alice Turrell's family have thrown themselves into club life at Cransley Sailing Club after being encouraged to go along to the club's 2018 Push The Boat Out open day by friends. Not only are Leo, 13, 10-year-old Max and Eve, 8, enjoying life on the water, but having all three taking part in the same activity at the same place is giving Alice and husband, Bob, time to relax sitting in the fresh air at a lovely location and watching their children thrive.

If the glorious Easter bank holiday weather has got you thinking about switching off those screens and getting active outdoors, Cransley SC, near Kettering, is opening its doors from 11am on Sunday 5 May for the local community to get on board for a new adventure, before Middle Nene SC on Thrapston Sailing Lake will Push The Boat Out from 11am on Bank Holiday Monday 6 May.

After next weekend, Hollowell SC, near Guilsborough, welcomes anyone to have a go on Saturday 11 May, Banbury Sailing Club on Boddington Reservoir open their doors the next day (Sunday 12 May) and Northampton Sailing Club, on Pitsford Reservoir, brings the free sailing sessions to a close on Saturday 18 May.

All ages and abilities are welcome, with opportunities for children, families, beginners and lapsed sailors, as well as those with disabilities or special requirements for getting out on-the-water. All kit and safety equipment is provided so just bring a pair of old trainers you don't mind getting wet and your sense of adventure and fun. Alice believes you won't regret it. She said: "The children loved the Open Day and were on the water until pack up time. It was fantastic to see how confident they were on the water, how much fun they were having and importantly how Nigel (Cransley's RYA Training Principal) used such positive and supportive language, which grew the children's confidence even more and gave them the want to learn more.

"We stayed involved because it's fun, the children absolutely love it and the club is perfect for us as a family; friendly, affordable and very inclusive. We were recently there for five hours one Saturday and Leo didn't give his Xbox a second thought, so it must have been good! Max just loves being outside, so sailing fits perfectly for him, and Eve wants to do everything the same as her older brothers. We were amazed at her stamina and strength.

"Cransley is absolutely a hidden gem. I've lived in Kettering for 49 years and didn't even realise it was there and right under my nose! It's truly an idyllic location and now I've found it we are so excited about being part of the club. I'm telling everyone about it and all the chances to try sailing coming up!"

With so much national focus on physical and mental wellbeing, being on the water gives everyone a chance to get away from modern life, spend time with the family, have fun with friends and just enjoy the feeling of being in the fresh air and closer to nature. A real family day out, many Push The Boat Out venues will also be putting on shore-side activities like BBQs and games for the kids too.

Michelle Gent, RYA Programmes Manager, added: "We are looking forward to another fantastic month of RYA Push the Boat Out events and try sailing opportunities this year. Many people don't realise that there's a club and a gateway to the water right on their doorstep and it's a brilliant opportunity to get involved and find out more!"

More than 390 RYA affiliated clubs and recognised training centres across the UK are inviting people to Push The Boat Out throughout May. Almost 22,000 people regularly go along to their local sailing club every month across the Midlands, getting on the water in small sailboats or windsurfing on the region's reservoirs, lakes and rivers.

The national RYA Push The Boat Out participation campaign aims to get more people out on the water and the RYA are asking all sailors to #TellAFriend and help spread the word! Check out the the video – https://youtu.be/KOiN2r5vCEc
