Basketball England has adopted a Code of Ethics & Conduct for all clubs, spectators, coaches, players, volunteers and members to adhere to and follow to ensure that everyone involved in basketball is 100% committed to maintaining the highest possible standards of behaviour.

All such individuals have a responsibility to act according to the highest standards of integrity, and to ensure that the reputation of basketball is beyond reproach so ensure that basketball can be enjoyed by all, in a safe and welcoming environment.

Below I have broken down the key elements of the Code of Conduct that must be followed by all at each Basketball England event, National League game, local league game and all of those involved in the sport of basketball under the jurisdiction of Basketball England:

  • Everyone involved in basketball, both adults and young people have a responsibility to treat everyone with dignity, respect, sensitivity and fairness;
  • Every person involved in the game of basketball should be able to participate in an enjoyable and safe environment and be protected from abuse;
  • Ensure their behaviour is not misconstrued or open to allegations of favouritism, misconduct or impropriety;
  • Never use foul, sexist or racist language or act in a violent/abusive manner;
  • Refrain from undue public criticism of other coaches or match officials;
  • Support all efforts to remove verbal, physical and racist abuse from basketball;
  • Do not over emphasise the importance of winning;
  • Do not shout abuse at officials, coaches, players or other spectators;
  • Accept the decisions of the match officials without question or complaint;
