Partnership Transition Evening Success

Moving on to secondary school can be an intimidating time, and some students find changes in PE particularly challenging.
As part of the Corby, Oundle and Thrapston SSP Enhanced Programme, more than 70 year 6 pupils attended sports and PE transition evenings at their new secondary schools in the lead up to summer.
Corby Business Academy, Lodge Park Academy and Prince William School all welcomed new pupils through their doors to experience a taste of secondary school PE and learn about the sporting opportunities available to them. Staff showed them around facilities and talked them through kit, changing, lesson times and how to join clubs.
"It was really good to see where I would change and put my things for PE. I was worried about how different it would be but now I am excited" – Zoe, attending CBA
Pupils also experienced some team building games as well as some of the activities specific to the schools own provision, such as Lodge Park's David Ross Indoor Rowing Challenge.
"I can't wait to get to Lodge Park so I can row again – it's something I would never have thought to try but could be really good at" – Morgan-Leigh, attending Lodge Park
It wasn't all about the pupils though, sessions like this have proven valuable to the secondary schools themselves.
"Bringing in pupils early is really useful for us. It allows them to get used to us, to have a face to look for when they arrive in September, and to know what to expect. Running PE transition sessions is really valuable to us as it highlights the importance of whole-child education to Lodge Park" – Alice Smyth, Lodge Park
Community Sports Development Officer Chris Long said "Transition is an area that is really important to children, parents and schools. Whilst some schools include PE lessons in their standard transition days, having bespoke sessions gives pupils that extra time to ask any questions they may have, and build initial relationships with future classmates."
Following the success of this pilot programme, the scheme will roll out to include more schools in 2018.
