Over 700 young disabled people and their families attended the Summer SENDsation event at Northampton College on Sunday 11th June and many of them participated in 9 different sports taster sessions provided by local clubs which were organised by Northamptonshire Sport. These included boccia, climbing, dance, football, frisbee golf, martial arts, new age kurling, seated swimming and tennis. A group of disabled adults who are currently taking a Sports Leaders course through the Learn 2b programme provided the dance, martial arts and seated swimming activities.
The event was organised in partnership between the Northamptonshire Local Offer team, Northamptonshire Parent Forum Group, Information Advice Support Services, Northampton College and Northamptonshire Sport as a way of providing information on services available in the county for young people with Special Educational Needs. It was funded by a grant received by the Parent Forum Group from the Northamptonshire Community Foundation.
Summer SENDsation was also attended by Dermot Bailey from Northamptonshire who plays wheelchair tennis for Great Britain. Dermot played an exhibition match against Gary Cox who is also from the county and an emerging talent in the sport. They both assisted coaches from the Northants Disability Tennis Network (NDTN) to deliver coaching sessions to young disabled people who attended using new wheelchair tennis chairs that NDTN has recently acquired.
Northamptonshire Sport's Disability Development Officer, Graeme Wilson said of the event:
" It was great to see so many young disabled people and their families attending Summer SENDsation. They all had lots of fun trying the sports we had on offer, and hopefully they'll all use the information we provided them with to find activities available to them around the county that they can participate in on a regular basis. It was also brilliant to have Dermot and Gary at the event to help inspire the young people by showing what disabled people can achieve in sport."
