Once again every school that had practical swimming lesson delivered by one of our team last week had an element of water safety included. This ranged from a discussion about the SAFE code up to a full practical drowning prevention lesson.
On Wednesday 21st June the annual Drowning Prevention event at the Nene Whitewater Centre saw our team of instructors working alongside the centre staff and Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue to teach vital life skills to 50 students from five Northamptonshire secondary schools. Throughout the day the students learned about the dangers of open water and CPR as well experiencing open water in a safe and controlled way. The day finished with a Fire Service demonstration of advanced rescue techniques.
This year a new partnership between Northamptonshire Sport and Hilton Northampton has resulted in school information packs being distributed to 85 schools across the county via our School Swimming Instructors. The information pack encourages schools to plan in some prevention work through classroom activities or assemblies by registering for free resources from RLSS UK.
In addition to the packs, staff Hilton Hotels accompanied our Schools Swimming Manager to eight different primary schools which the Hilton Northampton had 'adopted', to help pupils to understand why swimming in open water is so different to swimming in pools. The hour long workshops were based around the SAFE code and started with pupils Spotting the dangers, discussing where to get Advice from, why it is always good to go with a Friend and finally knowing how to help in an Emergency without putting themselves in danger.
Thanks to our existing and new partners last week we directly educated 4500 pupils and indirectly, via Hilton Northampton's packs, many thousands more.
