The Northants 5k Race Series – sponsored by Decathlon – got off to a flying start on Sunday 23rd April with 250 runners taking part in the first race of this year's Series at Irchester Country Park.
Participants of all abilities, including club runners, those from jogging groups and even complete 5k beginners, were greeted by perfect weather conditions and a large gathering of supporters to help them around the challenging, but very enjoyable woodland trail route.
The event got under way at 10.30am with a 2k Junior Fun Run, where 19 youngsters set a blistering pace for the adults to follow. First home was Ayrton Rice in 10 minutes 41 seconds, with Ben Holmes and Molly White 4 and 6 seconds behind respectively.
The main 5k race followed shortly afterwards at 11am and speaking after the event, Will Heckford, the Race Director from Northamptonshire Sport, was delighted with how everything unfolded:
"We have been absolutely astounded by the response to the Race Series. We've almost doubled the number of race participants at Irchester last year and this led to a fantastic atmosphere on the day. It was brilliant to see so many beginners and first time 5k runners taking part. The Series really is suitable for all abilities and we look forward to welcoming plenty more runners to our next event in May!"

The next race in the Series will be held on Wednesday 17th May at Salcey Forest, and with over 200 bookings already made, it looks set to be another sell out! This will be followed by the penultimate race at Brixworth Country Park on Friday 23rd June and the Series finale at Delapre Abbey on Wednesday 19th July.
