Corby Amateur Boxing Club and Kingswood Academy named best in East Midlands

A sports satellite club based in Corby has been named as the best in East Midlands, in recognition of its work to help get more young people playing sport.

The satellite club delivered by Corby Amateur Boxing Clubhas brought boxing into the heart of Corby. Started in April 2015, the club was designed to attract young people that had not engaged in any traditional extra-curricular activities. Since the launch, over 30 young people have attended the sessions and a number of them have become licensed boxers at the club.

Satellite clubs are extensions of community sports clubs, which use different venues such as a secondary schools or colleges to offer a range of sports to young people who may not be regularly active, or lack the confidence to join a sports club.

Using National Lottery funding, 9,348 satellite clubs have been established across England, helping to get 430,286 young people into sport since 2012. By 2017, every secondary school in England will have been offered a satellite community sports club on its site. Satellite clubs are delivered by community sports clubs supported by the network of county sports partnerships and national governing bodies of sport.

15-year-old Connor Scott who lives in Corby, Northamptonshire said "The Satellite Club inspired to me join the community club and train weekly. Before joining, I wasn't sure if boxing was for me but John the coach has helped to increase my confidence and I am looking forward to my future with the club."

Director of Community Sport at Sport England, Mike Diaper, said: "Congratulations to Corby Amateur Boxing Club and The Kingswood Secondary Academy . Given the benefits of being active it's really important that we do all we can to engage people who might think sport isn't for them. Thanks to their hard work, the satellite club is creating formidable pathways to help get young people in Corby tobecome active in the best way that suits them."

Offering young people an opportunity to stay active and play more sport, their efforts are making a real difference to community sport in in Corby."
