Daventry Leisure Centre was the host of the South Northants and Daventry SSP School Games Year 5/6 Swimming Gala on Tuesday 7th June as teams from 16 primary schools around the districts completed for places at the Level 3 Finals.
The event saw teams from Helmdon, Southfield, Pitsford, Guilsborough Crick, Deanshanger, Overstone, Upton Meadows, Brixworth, Woodland View, Brackley Juniors, Ashby Fields, CCS, Bracken Leas, Wootton and Nicholas Hawksmoor compete across 11 different individual and relay races. All the races were kindly supported by club volunteers from Daventry Dolphins Swimming Club, who took on the role of officiating over the races and conducting the timekeeping.
The teams competed across three heats with time from the three then being compared to give an overall position for each event. Teams/swimmers finishing in the top 6 then earnt point towards their team total with 6pts being awarded to 1st place and 1pt given to 6th place. Races included the 4x25m Medley and Freestyle Relays and individual events for boys and girls in breaststroke, butterfly, freestyle and backstroke. The event finished off with the Cannon Relay where 8 swimmers competed for each school.
Once all of the races had finsihed and all of the scores had been counted, it was Nicholas Hawksmoor who claimed victory with 49 points. Last year's district winners Wootton edged 2nd place with 41 points with current County Champions Bracken Leas claiming third with 38 points. Full results of each individual race as well as the overall team scores can be found in the attachment at the bottom of this report.
The SSP would like to thank all of the swimmers, teachers and parents who supported and encouraged everyone during the competition. They would also like to reserve special thanks to all of the volunteers from Daventry Dolphins Swimming Club who without their help, the event would not have been possible.
Good luck to Nicholas Hawksmoor and Wootton as they progress to the School Games Level 3 Swimming Finals at Corby International Pool on Friday 24th June.
