In this week's article of Inclusive Volunteer Month, Nationwide highlight the success and benefits of businesses supporting employee's volunteering during work time through the Employer Supported Volunteering programme.
Nationwide is the world's largest building society, with over 15 million customers. One of Nationwide's administration centres is based at Moulton Park in Northampton and over 2000 employees are based there.
In 2012, Nationwide launched Living on your side, a five year citizenship strategy which lies behind all its decisions, all of its employees' thinking and in all of its business practices. Volunteering is a key part of this and Nationwide offers an Employer Supported Volunteering (ESV) programme which actively supports employee's volunteering during work hours. Employees are provided with the opportunity to volunteer during work time for up to two days per year to support local communities and charities.
ESV can provide benefits to employers as well as employees and the charities that they work with. Consumers often prefer to buy services and products from organisations that demonstrate their corporate social responsibility. The greatest resource of a company is to share the time and skills of its workforce to benefit good causes.
Nationwide is extremely proud of the great work its employees do in their local communities, for instance:
- 76% of employees actively involved in citizenship (this includes fundraising, volunteering and helping to protect the environment)
- In 2015/16 alone over £1.4m has been raised by Nationwide employees for charity
- Nationwide employees have taken part in more than 72,000 hours of volunteering activities during work hours over one year
Samantha Owen, Citizenship Manager at Nationwide, comments: "For us, citizenship is about how we stay true to our mutual values and run our business in a responsible and ethical way, making a difference to local communities."
"Through our centre in Northampton, employees have volunteered for projects such as Sport Relief, BBC Children in Need, and Macmillan Cancer Support as well as many local charities and community groups.
As part of the Living on your side strategy, Nationwide also runs a Side by Side volunteering programme which give employees and members the opportunity to join forces and invest their time to support community projects in need.
Northamptonshire Sport provides local business with a variety of volunteering opportunities through local clubs and events ranging from one off events to more regular opportunities.
Businesses can also get involved in Workplace Challenge initiative which aims to promote sport, physical activity, and health improvements across the workplace. The initiative encourages employees to battle it out to win points for their company or organisation by taking part in sport and physical activity.
