Over 100 children from primary schools across South Northants and Daventry took part in the School Games Level 2 Gymnastics Finals at Danes Camp on Monday 16th May with plenty of medals handed out across the three competitions.
Supported by Amethyst Gymnastics Club, the event saw teams compete in separate Year 1/2, 3/4 and 5/6 competitions with two places on offer in each competition to progress to the next round. There were also individual prizes on offer for the children with the highest scores in the Vault, Floor, Body Management and All-Round.
In the Year 1/2 competition, 8 teams from Preston Hedges, Ashby Fields, CCS, Kislingbury, Sywell, Newbottle and Charlton, St James Infants and The Bramptons competed each fo the three rotations. Once all the scores were collected, it was Preston Hedges who took 1st place with a total of 76.2pts with Ashby Fields in 2nd with 73.9pts. The star of the show was Preston Hedges Isobel Scott, who collected 5 medals, achieving the highest individual scores at each rotation as well as her Team winning medal!
The Year 5/6 competition also saw 8 teams competing with children from Brixworth, Ashby Fields, Kislingbury, CCS, Sywell, Deanshanger, Preston Hedges and East Haddon taking part. Brixworth took 1st place with a total of 78.0pts with Ashby Fields in 2nd again with 76.9pts. Best All-Round was collected by Lottie Woodward with a total of 27.2pts out of 30.
The showpiece event of the day was the Year 3/4 competition with 14 teams taking part. The afternoon saw teams from The Bramptons, Crick, Newbottle & Charlton, Sywell, Deanshanger, Preston Hedges, Ashby Fields, Kislingbury, Brixworth, East Haddon, Staverton, Woodland View, Overstone and CCS taking part. In what proved to be the closest competition of the day, CCS claimed first place by the narrowest of margins from Overstone - 0.1pts being the difference as the teams finished on 78.4pts and 78.3pts respectively. There was however great individual success for Overstone as Jonathan Higgs claimed the Best Body Management, Best Floor and Best All-Round Individual medals. Hope Kiernan from Woodland View claimed the Best Vault award with the highest score of the day - a 9.7!!
Congratulations to all children who competed throughout the day and many thanks to all parents and adults who supported and encouraged the children in each of the competition. Special thanks are also reserved to the volunteer judges and scorers from Amethyst Gymnastic Club, whose knowledge and expertise made the event a great success. We wish Preston Hedges (Year 1/2), Ashby Fields (Year 1/2 & 5/6), Brixworth (Year 5/6), CCS and Overstone (both Year 3/4) all the best of luck as they progress through to the County Finals next week.
