The Grange overcomes the elements to reach Kwik Cricket Finals

It started off with clouds and then heavy showers but in the end, the Year 5/6 Kwik Cricket team from The Grange won the Daventry Town Kwik Cricket Competition at The Parker E-ACT Academy under clear blue skies.

The competition, supported by Sports Leaders from The Parker E-ACT, saw teams from Ashby Fields, The Grange, Newnham and The Abbey compete for the chance to progress to the South Northants and Daventry SSP School Games Kwik Cricket Finals Day on Thursday 16th June.

Following a brief stoppage when rain interrupted play, the children from each of the schools demonstrated their ever developing cricket skills in the round robin competition. The first round of matches saw The Grange claim victory over The Abbey and Ashby Fields triumph over Newnham. Some strong batting from Ashby Fields gave them the win when they faced The Abbey in the second round of matches and their victory, along with The Grange's victory over Newnham, set up a winner-takes-all decider in final round.

The final round of matches saw The Abbey face Newnham in what turned out to be a battle for third place and The Grange took on Ashby Fields with the winner claiming the competition win and a place in the next round. With Newnham claiming third with a 22-run victory over The Abbey, The Grange went into their match batting first and following some strong batting towards the end of their innings, they built up a total of 226 runs.

Chasing the win, Ashby Fields went on the attack and whilst they were picking up runs, the loss of a number of key wickets allowed the The Grange to take the upper hand going into the final over and despite two 6s and a four being scored, The Grange secured vicory by limiting Ashby Fields to 209 runs - a victory of 17 runs.

The SSP would like to congratulate all of the children for their efforts during the evening and also thank all staff and parents who supported them for their patience with the weather. Special thanks are also reserved for the Sports Leaders of The Parker E-ACT for umpiring the matches. We wish The Grange the best of luck as they progress to the next round and face the nine other cluster winners from around South Northants and Daventry.
