Northampton Sailability offers facilities for disabled people to enjoy a wide variety of sailing activities, ranging from guided tours around Pitsford reservoir to teaching to Royal Yachting Association (RYA) standards in dinghy and keelboat sailing. They use specially adapted boats where needed to provide regular Sailing opportunities for their members and groups from schools, day care providers, charities etc.
In 2012 as part of the legacy from the Paralympic Games Northamptonshire Federation of Disability Sport (NFDS) helped Northampton Sailability Club to make their facilities more accessible to people with physical disabilities through a grant of £1000. This grant was used to improve ramp access to their clubhouse and changing facilities as well as the paths around the site being made more wheelchair friendly.
Once the building work had been completed the remainder of the funding was utilised to train up some of the Sailability volunteers to become Instructors. In the summer of 2013 they then provided 8 weeks of introductory sessions for 50 people with physical disabilities who wouldn't of previously been able to access the facilities before the funded construction work had been done.
NFDS is Northamptonshire Sport's good cause for 2015 and any money raised will go to help other good causes like Northampton Sailability Club who in turn will get more disabled people in the county physically active. Anyone who would like to assist us in our fundraising efforts can do so by making a donation to NFDS on their Local Giving page.
