Northamptonshire Sport targets children’s water safety during Drowning Prevention week

As part of the Royal Lifesaving Society's Drowning Prevention Week (22nd to 28th June), Northamptonshire Sport are delivering important water safety education throughout the week.
Northamptonshire Sport Schools Swimming Manager, Steve Jackson, and his team of instructors are targeting schools across the county to keep children safe around water, aiming to reduce the number of drowning or near drownings in Northamptonshire.
On Monday 22nd June an event has been organised at Waendel Leisure Centre, Wellingborough. Staff from Northamptonshire Sport School Swimming Team; Northants Fire and Rescue; and staff from Waendel Leisure Centre, will work with primary school pupils to teach them how to stay safe near open water, what to do should they fall into open water and what to do in an emergency without putting themselves in danger.
On Wednesday 24th June Northamptonshire Sport School Swimming Instructors along with Northants Fire and Rescue staff from the Nene Whitewater Centre, Northampton, are working with Year 7 students, teaching them the important skills associated with staying safe near open water. As part of this event the students will have the opportunity to experience swimming in open water in a safe and controlled environment.
On Friday 26th June Northamptonshire Sport School Swimming have arranged for a Save a Baby workshop to be delivered at East Hunsbury Library, Northampton. This RLSS workshop is open to the public and aimed at teaching parents of very young children the important lifesaving techniques of CPR and what to do in if a child is choking.
Steve Jackson (Northamptonshire Sport Schools Swimming Manager) commented:
'In addition to the special events, 100 special Royal Lifesaving Society – Anti Drowning Schools Packs have been distributed via our swimming instructors to enable schools to deliver assemblies and lessons. All schools having a practical swimming lesson with Northamptonshire instructors during Drowning Prevention Week will also have a water safety element included in their lesson'.
He added, 'The Northamptonshire Sport School Swimming Team along with the Royal Life Saving Society UK are working hard to ensure that children are educated on how to have fun and stay safe around water, and reduce drowning and near drowning in the county'.
