Sunday 26th April not only featured the London Marathon but the Corby 5k, which was the first race in the County 5k series, sponsored by RIGID, and first scoring race for the Northants Road Running League.
In great conditions for racing, Sian Edwards fresh from warm weather training in Portugal, broke her own course record by 2 seconds to finish first female in 16.54. Sian's superb run actually brought her home just behind the first male and overall winner Matt Fowler from Kettering Harriers, who finished in 16.47.
The second and third male finishers were both from Silson Joggers as Chris Wood in 17.05 just pipped his team mate Thomas Phelps who ran 17.11.
In the Women's race second place went to Alison Hirst in 18.15, and third place to Kelly Barnett in 18.27. Just behind Kelly, Corby's Helena Keenan also just back from training in Portugal recorded a big lifetime best of 18.35 ranking her 5th u/20 in the UK rankings.
The team prize went to Wellingborough who just got the nod ahead of Silson with Greg Spellman, Edward Frain, Keith Molloy and Andrew McKenna as their scorers.
It wasn't just about the sharp end though, as many runners were taking part in their first race after training within the 'Jog Northants' groups set up throughout the County especially a group started in Corby in January based at Rockingham Triangle at Corby ac base. The group started by Northamptonshire Sport County Activator Sarah Harvey and led by Tracey Shepherd, Corinne Wilson and Matt Robey had the Corby 5k in their sights as a target and all the groups hard work came to fruition when they crossed the line on Sunday!
The series now looks ahead to Monday 18th May for the second race at Kettering!
