On Wednesday 22nd April, thirty Year 4 and 5 children from five primary schools competed in the first of two South Northants and Daventry School Games Archery competitions at Sponne School.
The team; from Gayton, The Grange Towcester CoE, Bracken Leas and Blakesley Primary Schools; took turns to compete in four different skill stations, building up points for their teams. Led by Sports Leaders from Sponne School, the children took part in Traditional Archery, Clout (a target based game requiring an upward shot of the arrow), Jigsaw and Tin Can Alley.
With a maximum of 4 schools competing at the stations at any one time, the fifth team were responsible for observing the other children and rewarding them with stickers for the Sainsbury's School Games 'Spirit of the Games'. The children were looking for examples of Passion, Teamwork, Respect, Self Belief, Determination and Honesty as they roamed the Sports Hall.
At the end of the competition, it was the team from Towcester CoE who emerged victorious with 146pts with Gayton Primary finishing in 2nd with 106pts. The Grange ended up in 3rd with 96pts and Blakesley and Bracken Leas in 4th and 5th with 90pts and 64pts respectively.
These scores will be compared with results from an 8-team competition at Campion School on Wednesday 29th April, with the top two scoring teams across both events being invited to represent South Northants and Daventry at the Summer School Games at Moulton College on Thursday 9th July.
The Partnership would like to extend its thanks to all the children who competed in the competition and all teachers, parents and carers who supported the children during the evening. Special thanks also go to Mrs Yuill and the Sports Leaders, whose support was invaluable leading the different activities.
