Northants Cricket's team captain Alex Wakely and England Women's cricketer Jenny Gunn, went along to Ecton Brook Primary School on Tuesday 18th November 2014 to present the Sainsbury's School Games Mark certificates to those schools from the Northampton School Sports Partnership who successfully gained an award for their efforts during the academic year 2013/2014.
The awards are part of the Sainsbury's School Games Mark which is owned and created by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, but implemented and developed by the Youth Sport Trust. The Mark rewards schools for their commitment to and development of competition, school sport and physical education. The Mark focuses on 4 key areas - Participation, Competition, Workforce and Clubs.
Natalie Lawrence, School Sports Manager at Northampton School Sport Partnership said, "Last year we had just seven schools achieving the School Games Mark (known then as Kitemark). This year the Northampton School Sports Partnership is celebrating the success and achievements of 15 schools. It is great to be able to celebrate and promote the exceptional opportunities and commitment that these schools show, whilst positively demonstrating the important impact that PE and School Sport can have on young people's health, well-being and ability to reach their potential".
Alex Wakely added, "It was a pleasure to go down to Ecton Brook Primary to check out the future of sport in the County. It is brilliant to see so many young kids playing all sorts of sports, learning about winning and losing, dealing with highs and lows, but most importantly doing it all with a big smile! A special mention must go to the staff who teach their children the skills involved and push them to be the best they can be. Without them Northamptonshire Sport wouldn't be doing as well as it is! The "Sainsbury's School Games Mark" is a fantastic initiative and I know it won't be long before Northampton SSP schools are achieving Gold Awards on a regular basis."
Jenny Gunn commented, "I was honoured to be invited to the Northampton School Sports Partnership awards. The smile on all the children's faces just shows how much sport has had a positive impact on their lives and hopefully will continue to have an impact in the future."
