Pupils from Standens Barn Primary School and St Mary's Catholic Primary School can enjoy a summer of fun on the water after becoming the latest Northampton youngsters to get a taste for sailing through RYA OnBoard with Northampton Sea Cadets.
In total 12 of the schools' pupils took part in a number of afternoon sessions throughout June and July on the River Nene, learning to sail and having fun under the watchful eye of the Cadet's volunteer RYA qualified instructors and helpers. All the children have now gained their RYA Stage 1 Youth Sailing Award and received special OnBoard certificates to show they had gained their fledging sea legs.
RYA OnBoard is the national sailing and windsurfing programme providing low cost opportunities for schools and youth groups enabling kids aged eight to 18 to learn to sail and stay in the sport, and as an official OnBoard club local youngsters have the opportunity to do just that at Northampton Sea Cadets!
Northampton Sea Cadets has introduced 202 youngsters to sailing since they introduced OnBoard five years ago.
And it's not just the youngsters that have an awesome time in these sessions, the volunteer instructors and cadets from Northampton Sea Cadets get as much out of it too.
As Clare Read, Lieutenant (SCC) RNR, Officer in Charge at Northampton Sea Cadets, explains: "The volunteers and cadets have gained much satisfaction in teaching these young people their favourite hobby. The children get to use many types of boats in order to get a fuller idea of what sailing is really about - having fun! It is hoped that these sessions will help continue to get young people into sailing!"
Jon Sweet,RYA Sailing Development Officer for Northamptonshire, added: "OnBoard continues to play a pivotal role in getting youngsters into sailing and windsurfing across the county and again we have been delighted with how many newcomers have been introduced to the sport at the five OnBoard clubs in Northamptonshire so far this year. The schools may have broken up for the summer now but OnBoard will be back in September!"
Meanwhile, Northampton Sea Cadets are recruiting for adult volunteers and cadets. Anyone interested in becoming part of the team should contact the unit via the website www.northamptonseacadets.org
