Drowning Prevention Week in Northamptonshire

Drowning Prevention Week is the national campaign run by the Royal Life Saving Society UK to promote water safety messages and help reduce incidents of drowning.

Around 400 people drown in the UK each year, and thousands more have near-drowning experiences, many suffering life changing injuries. Shockingly drowning is the third highest cause of accidental death in children in the UK.

As part of Drowning Prevention Week, Northamptonshire Sport's team of school swimming instructors will be working in partnership with leisure centres and Northants Fire and Rescue Service to deliver a number of events and activities to encourage schools, clubs, and communities to come up with new and exciting ways to show people how they can have fun and stay safe around water.

As well as including an element of water safety in school swimming lessons for schools during the week there will be 3 Get Safe events:

Monday 23rd June, 9.30-11.30, Waendel Leisure Centre, Wellingborough
Year 5 & 6 pupils who will learn the dangers of open water, CPR, safe rescue techniques, and personal survival techniques

Tuesday 24th June, Towcester Centre for Leisure
Year 5 & 6 pupils who will learn the dangers of open water, CPR, safe rescue techniques, and personal survival techniques

Thursday 26th June, 9.30-1pm, Nene White Water Centre, Northampton
Year 7 students will be learning the dangers of open water, CPR and safe rescue techniques and will also have the opportunity to experience swimming in open water.
