About Jean and Don
A good workout is social, fun and full of laughter.
Jean has been doing physical activity classes with local charity SERVE for three years. Her husband Don drove her to the sessions, waiting outside to take his wife home at the end of the class. Don grew bored with the waiting and recently decided to join in and increase his activity levels.
As well as gardening and woodwork, the couple find the activity classes add fun, exercise and laughter to their week. Their daughter reports improvements in her parents' health since they've become more physically active, they're moving with more ease and ache less.
Despite Jean having had two knee replacements she still enjoys getting out and being active around their village and eating lunch in the local park.
SERVE has been supporting elderly people and adults with disabilities in East Northants and the surrounding areas for nearly 40 years.
COVID-19 meant that in March 2020, all SERVE exercise groups were stopped. Due to ongoing work in other areas the charity wasn't able to start online groups immediately.
With support through Sport England's 'Tackling Inequalities Fund' which is allocated by Northamptonshire Sport, SERVE was eventually able to offer online exercise sessions. After a few initial 'teething problems', they were extremely successful in keeping people physically active but also socially connected.
SERVE believe that when they are eventually back to a state of normality, they can feel proud that they were able to continue supporting residents. Through the ongoing challenges, the SERVE volunteers were fantastic, to find out more about the great work they do visit:
