Carole has Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) which has resulted in her becoming a wheelchair user and for a time this prevented her from being active. Having previously been extremely active on a regular basis the pain caused by her CRPS had a severe effect on her confidence and ability to do so.
This however changed in 2012 when Carole attended a wheelchair racing taster session organised by Northamptonshire Sport, England Athletics and Corby Athletics Club. Having been inspired watching the likes of David Weir and Hannah Cockcroft competing in wheelchair racing events at the Paralympics in London earlier that year Carole decided that she would like to have a go at the sport. She really enjoyed the taster session and started training regularly at sessions organised by the newly formed Northamptonshire Wheelchair Racing Academy.
Since 2012 Carole has improved her racing technique, strength and stamina which have helped her to compete in a number of events. These have been of various distances on and off the track, also including para – triathlons.
As shown in her 'See Active Be Active' film Carole also regularly participates in the Northampton parkrun which is held at the Racecourse. This has helped to build up her fitness and get use to pushing around a course on paths as oppose to the track. She also enjoys the social aspect of the parkrun events where she has made lots of friends who support her around the 5K course at 9am every Saturday.
Carole has also given back to others by volunteering at the NRG multi – sports club which is organised by Corby Borough Council for people with additional needs. The club which is ran at Lodge Park Sports Centre every Thursday 5-6pm provides disabled people with opportunities to get active with their peers, family members, friends and carers in a fun, relaxed, social environment. Carole helps support participants to participate in the activities and provides them with encouragement.
