The Northamptonshire Federation of Disability Sport (NFDS) is an organisation working under the auspices of Northamptonshire Sport and the English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS). The organisation brings together people with disabilities and voluntary organisations along with the main providers of sport in order to work collectively to overcome barriers to participation in sport across the county.

NFDS is strategic in nature and works to identified community needs through establishing key outcomes. Working with (and empowering) key partners, NFDS seeks to address barriers to participation so increasing opportunities for disabled people at a local level; it is not only possible to deliver to isolated disability communities, but also ensure that they are able to absorb new ways of working with isolated communities.

The main aim of NFDS is to increase the number of disabled people involved in all aspects of sport, recreation and physical activity within Northamptonshire. In order to achieve this, NFDS has five key objectives:

  • To act as a collective voice for disability sport in Northamptonshire at both a county and regional level
  • To develop county and local partnerships between voluntary, statutory and private agencies to counter barriers faced by disabled people with regard to all aspects of sport, recreation and physical activity
  • To ensure disabled participants have access to sporting opportunities at a level of their choosing and ability, in all aspects of sport, recreation and physical activity
  • To empower disabled people to make a positive contribution in all aspects of sport, recreation and physical activity
  • To ensure that each disabled person is treated fairly, without discrimination, regardless of his or her gender, age, ethnicity, sexual orientation or economic background
