Cricket
Northamptonshire Sport has worked closely with the Northamptonshire Cricket Board and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to deliver, in partnership with local authorities, key elements of the National Strategy for Cricket. This strategy intends "...for England to become the most successful and respected cricket nation in the world."
The Active Sports / Whole Sport Plan Cricket programme will provide opportunities for boys, girls, young disabled people, young people from black, Asian and other ethnic minorities and those young people from families on low incomes. The programme aims to broaden the appeal of cricket to a greater number of young people, provide increased access to high-quality coaching and competition, bring more young people into clubs and widen opportunities for potentially talented young players.
Stage One - Local Schemes
Stage One aims to attract 10-14 year old girls and boys who have already learnt the basics of the game, usually in school, and now wish to take their involvement further. These young players will get the opportunity to participate in new coaching programmes that will run at various times of the year. The coaching will focuse on developing skills and tactical awareness of the game and will also provide links to local clubs.
Stage Two - Club development
This stage includes developing and setting up quality junior clubs. These organisations will be responsible for providing regular coaching, competition and social programmes so that the players, both girls and boys, can continue to improve their skills and enjoy the benefits of regular competition throughout the season. Such clubs will be developed not only to satisfy Active Sports' / Whole Sport Plans minimum standards relating to safe play and equal opportunities, but also to meet the criteria of the ECB Model Club Development Plan booklet.

Stage Three - Assessment - District Cricket
This third stage concentrates on the most effective way of assessing the abilities of those who are participating at a local level in schools and clubs and want to take their involvement with cricket further.
Assessments will be held for U13 and U15 boys in each of the four district cricket associations and will lead to participants moving into representational district cricket.
Stage Four - Development squads
Those identified at Stage Three as having ability and talent will get additional training and assessment through district U13 and U15 development squads. From January to April these will provide indoor coaching sessions focused on core technical competencies and an introduction to basic sports science. Between April and May the activity will move to outdoor coaching sessions on grass pitches and inter-area friendly matches with mini-festivals for area squads during August.
