17/07/2007 Results from 2007 National Championships

Northamptonshire Trampoline Gymnastics Academy (NTGA) are celebrating after what can only be described as a fantastic weekend at the British Championships 2007 held at the stunning National Indoor Arena, Birmingham, the last event of the season.

After a mixed season Northamptonshire Trampoline Gymnastics Academy are elated with their share of British titles & medals at the British Championships where all the country’s finest gymnasts met to battle for the highest accolade

British Champion 2007 , JAMES HIGGINS (23) – Men’s Elite Champion, James stunned the spectators with his showcase routines leading from the first round. Higgins who took a lengthy break from the sport and returned last year by winning the age group event now has his first ever senior British title showing true style and determination. This win is also the first step to achieving a potential place on the Great Britain team for the World Championships, Quebec, Canada (November) which is also the Beijing Olympic qualifying event. Two other trials will take place over the weekends of 8/9 & 15/ 16 September 2007.

British Champion 2007, YASMIN GUMBS (17) – Under 19 age group, Gumbs approached the week of the British Championships with mixed feelings as she had experienced  an ‘up & down’ season. However Gumbs managed to keep all her emotions in check realising that if she wanted to achieve her own goal of winning a consecutive British title then she was going to have to be at her very best. Gumbs held her composure over the three day event to win with a solid, high & powerful performance which gave her an impressive 1.4 point lead. Gumbs also competed in the Ladies Senior event and secured an impressive 5th place
her highest ever senior rank at a Championship event.

2 x Runner Up, Jaime Moore (26) – as in 2006 Moore was once again runner up in both the Ladies Elite event and the Over 19 age group as she continues to chase Britain’s number one Claire Wright. Nothing much separates these two world class gymnasts who compete together for Great Britain. Jaime gave it everything with a great performance of her new voluntary routine in which she has increased her difficulty score ready for the World Championships later this year. Moore has now secured her place on the British Team for the World’s due to the criteria set.

Steve Walsh (21) - Over 19 Men made the podium in an impressive 3rd place this year. Walsh has maintained a secure season with podium finishes already but needed a polished & solid performance to win a medal at the British. He had set top 3 as his goal and knew what was needed to achieve a podium place and he delivered. Walsh also gained 5th place in the senior Men’s event showing that he is steadily improving through the ranks and will work to achieve more in the mix with the senior men in the next year or so.

3 x BRITISH TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP TITLES FOR ACADEMY
James Higgins, Steve Walsh & Danny Creedon achieved a consecutive Senior Men’s Team title winning by a massive margin of 8.7 marks.

Yasmin Gumbs, Amanda Harris & Rebecca Pedley won the Under 19 Girls British Team title whilst their younger team mates, Katie Mackenzie, Penny Mitchell & Vicky Payne in the Under 17 Girls category made it a treble team title for the Academy

Tracy Whittaker-Smith, head coach at the Academy said:

“We are delighted to report the Academy’s success. The hard work and persistence of the gymnasts and coaches at the Academy has paid off. A six day a week training programme was implemented last year with some gymnasts training up to 30 hours a week. A trip to China for a training camp in May this year proved we still have quiet a lot of work to do but NTGA are prepared to give it a real go to chase the leading nation in the world today (China).
