What is the Cultural Olympiad?
The Olympic Games and Paralympic Games are about more than sport, London 2012 is also staging a Cultural Olympiad - a series of events to showcase the UK's arts and culture to the rest of the world. The four year London 2012 Cultural Olympiad started in September 2008, at the end of the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games. It is the largest cultural celebration in the history of the modern
Olympic and Paralympic Games, designed to give everyone in the UK a chance to be part of London 2012. Inspiring creativity across all forms of culture, especially among young people the aim is to make a real impact. Its legacy will last well beyond 2012.
What is the Open Weekend?

We estimate that from the 7,500 people took part in the event, 3,000 of those were under 16 years old and 4,500 were 16 years plus.
The three most successful elements were:
1. The events ethos: 'Culture' bringing people together
The event celebrated Culture using the mediums of Art, Sport, Heritage and Play. There were a wide range of partners from the voluntary, private and public sector, which all combined ideas for the event and worked in partnership to make the day such a success.
2. Demonstrations by Clubs, Groups and Organisations.
Throughout the day there were numerous displays by different clubs and groups in which some the community could also take part in. Some of the highlights were:
• The Corby Amateur Boxing club that set up a ring in the town centre which attracted a large crowd
• The SHAPE dance groups which put on a performance using the whole of the town centre 50m avenue
• CBC ran several demonstrations promoting their classes in Body Jam, Body Pump, Jive, Body Combat, Body Attack and Over 60's
• Mobile football pitch and the variety of sports that took place

3. Celebration of the 1 year anniversary of the opening of the pool
Highlights of the event were the Diving displays, Water polo, Rookie Lifeguard and the swimming club demonstrations and the Big about Music Choir that sang.
Also, the twin town relay with representatives from France and Germany taking part.
Land Securities kindly allowed the event to happen in the town centre and provided the prizes for the sports competitions.
