Active People Survey

The Active People Survey is the largest ever survey of sport and active recreation to be undertaken in Europe.

Active People 1

Sport England's first Active People survey ran from October 2005 to October 2006. It found that 21% of adults take part in at least three, moderate intensity 30 minute sessions of sport and physical activity every week (3 x 30).

Active People 2

Sport England commissioned the second Active People survey in 2007. This survey of English people's sporting habits has been used to establish a baseline we can use as a starting point as we measure our progress in getting one million people doing more sport by 2013.

Active People 3

Active People Survey 3 began on 15 October 2008 and ran for 12 months until mid October 2009.

Key highlights from Active People Survey 3:

  • The number of adults in England who do sport at least three times a week has reached 6.93 million
  • Athletics and cycling have each achieved increases of over 100,000 participants in the past year (between 2007/8 and 2008/9)
  • The number of men playing sport three times a week has risen by 176,000 to 4.203 million
  • Regular participation among non-white adults has increased by 98,800 to 713,800

Active People 4

The fourth year of the survey, Active People Survey 4, started in mid October 2009 and is running continuously for 12 months until mid October 2010.

Due to the continuous nature of the survey, we publish regular rolling updates based on results from the four most recent quarters of the survey.

The latest set of quarterly results (Quarter 2) based on data from April 2009 to April 2010, were published on 17 June 2010.

A further update, based on the most recent four quarters, will be published in September 2010, and annual results from Active People Survey 4 will be published in December 2010
