Sports Equity

Northamptonshire Sport Equity Statement

'Northamptonshire Sport is committed to ensuring the active participation of the whole community by ensuring all individuals have an equal opportunity to take part in sport, recreation and physical activity. Northamptonshire Sport will, where appropriate, work to remove barriers to participation and take positive action to address any inequalities identified in the provision of opportunities.'

Gary Sheppard, Senior Sports Development Manager

Message from the Director, Vanessa Brown.

Northamptonshire Sport is working with its partners to increase the opportunities for players, coaches, administrators and officials from all communities to get involved in sport. For Northamptonshire to strengthen sport within the county, it needs to see more women and girls, more minoritity ethnic communities and more disabled people taking part in sport at all levels and in all areas. We want to make sure that sport is a positive experience for all. Northamptonshire Sport is making real progress working towards the Foundation and Preliminary levels of the UK Equality Standard but are aware that achieving a standard is simply a step on a long journey of ensuring that sport is strengthened by embracing diversity and accessibility. An action plan for Equity will be now developed to work within the Northamptonshire Sport Delivery Plan and collectively the sporting partners will work together to promote equality and tackle discrimination where it currently exists.

Sport England Equity Statement

'Sports equity is about fairness in sport, equality of access, recognising inequalities and taking steps to address them. It is about changing the culture and structures of sport to ensure that it becomes equally accessible to all members of society, whatever their age, ability, gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality or social/economic status.'

What is Sports Equity

Equity means much more than equality, It is concerned more with fairness, inclusion, respect, and the upholding of social justice to ensure that all individuals are respected, have equal opportunities and have their rights protected. Northamptonshire Sport recognises that to achieve equality, might require an unequal distribution of effort, and the use of 'positive action' to reach the most disadvantaged or excluded groups.

By taking equitable actions, we can have Equality.

Equity(action) = Equality(outcome)

If you are a Black, Minority or Ethnic individual currently paricipating or involved in sport please go to www.work4sport.org.uk for more information and to register on  the Work 4 Sport Project and Voice East Midlands.
