Daventry Sports Park Youth Group
Daventry Sports Park Youth Group
This initiative is to target young people aged between 11-16 during term time, and those who do not have the opportunity to participate in sport at a facility like the Sports Park which is why the two main housing estates Southbrook and Headlands are targeted. Also this is highest concentration of this age group as this is where the two Daventry Secondary schools are based. As these two estates are a considerable distance from the Sports Park we provide a mini bus service from both schools which is very popular with 95-100% of attendees use the mini bus.
The youth group has 3 main aims which are to increase physical activity levels of young people, decrease the amount of petty crime and anti social behaviour in the two estates between 3:30-6:30pm and to raise profile of the Sports Park and increase usage.
DDC role is to facilitate the youth group at the Sports Park for the activities to take place and also provides supervision on the mini bus and at the group. Partners include the County Council especially Jo Danvers who attends every week and organises Community Sports Coaches at the sessions whereas DDC organise info for participants regarding local clubs where young people can join if they have enjoyed a particular activity. Other partners which we want to involve more are the PCT, Police, Time 2 Talk (young people counselling) to give the young people an educational theme to the group as well as promoting physical activity.
The initial pilot Jan 06-Mar 06 was funded through the Safer Daventry Partnership which covered the cost of the mini bus hire of that period. We now have secured funding to run the programme till the end of this academic year and the next academic year Sep06-Jul07 to continue running the mini bus service which is an integral part of the scheme as so many people that attend use this service.
If you would like any further information regarding this project please contact the Sports Development Team at Daventry District Council.
