Coach Education Generic Courses

Generic courses are available to all sports coaches (or potential coaches) from any sport.

Workshops will provide sports coaches with the information on current issues in sport and enable coaches from a wide range of sports to discuss specific topics which relate to coaching practice. Workshops use a variety of coaching methods and are friendly, informative and an invaluable tool for anyone interested in coaching.

Red Cross 1st Aid for Sport

This is the most popular first aid course offered by the British Red Cross. The programme focuses on key life-saving skills, provides an opportunity to learn the first aid response to the most common accidents and situations and is underpinned by relevant theory. The workshop has been adapted to focus specifically on sport. all NS coded workshops. 

Sports Coach UK Safeguarding and Protecting Children

This workshop aims to increase awareness of safeguarding and protecting children, helping coaches to recognise signs of abuse and poor practice, and deal sensitively and effectively with issues that arise. It also prompts a review of coaching practice to ensure that sport provide a positive and enriching experience for children.

*Sports Coaches who have not yet attended the scUK safeguarding training or who attended training over 3 years ago* 

Safeguarding & Protecting Children 2- Reflecting on Practice

By working through 'Safeguarding and Protecting Children 2', you will reflect on, and learn from, your own and others' coaching experiences. The workshop aims to ensure that the learning from the first 'Safeguarding and Protecting Children' workshop is consolidated and updated. It will provide a valuable opportunity to build on knowledge gained since the first workshop and share best practice through scenarios and reflection upon the experiences of participants.
'Safeguarding and Protecting Children 2' satisfies the requirements of the UKCC and Clubmark in relation to basic safeguarding and protecting children awareness training when attended as a 'refresher' workshop within three years of attending the first 'Safeguarding and Protecting Children' workshop.
 
*Coaches who have previously attended the scUK safeguarding training and need to renew their certificate* 

Safeguarding Awareness

This NEW workshop is aimed at non coaching staff and volunteers working within sport in Northamptonshire who have contact with children and/or young people. It has been developed in partnership with the Local Safeguarding Board. Following attendance at the workshop you will: Be aware of relevant legislation,
Understand your responsibilities in relation to safeguarding including information sharing, Be aware of the categories of abuse and possible indicators and know how to report your concerns.

*Non coaching volunteers or staff working in sport who have contact with children and/or young people (e.g. leisure centre staff, development officers, non coaching club volunteers* 

Sports Coach UK Equity in Your Coaching

This workshop is key for sports clubs working towards Clubmark, or equivalent, accreditation.

This workshop helps you to use and extend your existing skills to ensure that your coaching is truly open. Learn to identify barriers to participation and use appropriate language and terminology. 

EFDS Disability Awareness Training for Sports Coaches

The main focus of the training is to skill up candidates in how to adapt sport and physical activity for disabled people. This will include; understanding disability, examples of alternative communication and time dedicated to practical sessions to enable candidates to overcome barriers to delivery. 

Managing Challenging Behaviour

This three hour workshop has been devised to give coaches, volunteers, sports leaders and anyone working in a community based environment a better understanding and awareness of the challenging issues and behaviour that they may face, and identify effective communication styles and interventions in order to deal with such issues.

The main aims of the workshop are to:

  • Raise awareness and provide a basic understanding of challenging behaviour
  • Identify effective communication styles and proactive intervention strategies in order to prevent and manage behaviour
  • Provide participants the confidence to deal with behaviour issues within their own coaching session 

Adults Other Than Teachers working in schools (AOTTs)

This workshop is essential for all sports coaches or AOTTs working in schools. The workshop provides a basic understanding of key components of the national curriculum relating to the delivery of physical education, and addresses the key issues facing sports coaches working in schools. 

FUNs for everyone

This hugely successful 1-day practical course will introduce you to the 'FUNS for everyone' programme and show how it can support and enhance your delivery. You will explore what fundamentals and multi-skills are and why they are so important; gain an understanding of 'FUNS for everyone' as a personalised programme; familiarise yourself with a range of supporting resources and explore different delivery methods.

Structured around a staged series of challenges that introduce, build and develop the core fundamental movement skills-Balance, Coordination and Agility, the programme includes over 200 physical challenges organised to a circuit format with 12 stations and also contains an integrated awards scheme. As part of the course you will receive 3 outstanding resources- a 'Teacher Folder', a 'FUNS CD' with video clips of all the challenges and asset of 'Student Cards' that encourage independent learning and self and peer assessment. 

Raising the Bar

This 1-day practical course builds on the TIER 1 course and will enhance your understanding of multiskills as a broad, balanced, child-centred approach to PE and Sport. Supported by an exciting new and innovative resource, you will explore how to use the FUNS programme to develop the 'whole child', including their personal, physical, social, cognitive and creative abilities. The course is ideal for
those delivering Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 Curriculum, Multi-Skill Clubs and Gifted and Talented Academies.
Using the original 'FUNS for everyone' programme as a spine, the new resource includes 3 x 9 module schemes of work, providing you with a menu of sessions and activities linked to the different abilities. In addition, recognising the importance of assessment for learning, the resource is built around a Whole-Part- Whole method of delivery. 

Come into Coaching

Come into Coaching is a new scheme aimed at anyone thinking about becoming a coach. The workshop provides potential coaches with the opportunity to find out more about what is involved in coaching and what it takes to become a sports coach.

Following the workshop, candidates are provided with further information and sign posted onto other courses, resources and organisations suitable to their own development needs.

A Club for All

This workshop is key for sports clubs working towards Clubmark (or equivalent) accreditation

This workshop outlines how your club can reach all sections of the community, including young people, older people, those om low incomes, disabled people and people from ethnic minorities.

Sporting Volunteers - Recruiting and Supporting Volunteers in Placements

This workshop is key to sports clubs working who have signed up to Sporting Volunteers. This workshop will provide sports clubs with valuable hints and tips on recruiting new volunteers and making effective use of existing volunteers. Clubs will also be informed of local support to help them with the process.
