WAGs Week!

England's Sue Smith & participants at Wellingborough

FOOTBALL festivals for women and girls kicked off with England stars joining in the action.

The WAGs Women and Girls Festivals which took place in Wellingborough & Northampton on the 10th & 11th April was attended by over 140 women and girls.  The festival gave the opportunity for women and girls to participate in football activities, meet local clubs and meet special guests Sue Smith (England & Leeds Utd) and Faye White (England & Arsenal Ladies).  Players also learned tricks and skills in several coaching sessions, including sessions delivered by both the England Players.

Donna Norman, 18, who plays for Earls Barton Ladies, said: It was a good event and everybody had a lot of fun.  She said she started out playing for a boys team but the growth of ladies football meant there are now many more girls teams around.

Miss Smith said: 'Hopefully I am a role model and the girls can see what I have achieved, and they will want to carry on with football. It is good to just show them that they can achieve something and even become an England player or a Premier League player.'

The festivals took place at the Hindu Centre in Highfield Road and Unity College, Trinity Avenue Northampton, was run by Northamptonshire FA, County Youth Sports Forum and the Youth Sport Project of Northamptonshire Sport.
