Inspirational Day for Stars of the Future

Action for Blind

On Saturday 16th July a group of young people with Visual Impairments (VI) participated in a multi-sports event designed to teach them new skills and also to inspire them through the power of the Olympics and Paralympics.

The event which was organised in partnership by Action for Blind People, Northamptonshire Association of the Blind (NAB) and Northamptonshire Sport

During the day the young people participated in the sports of Kurling, Boccia and Goalball which is a Paralympic sport that can be played by anyone, but is designed specifically for people with Visual Impairments.

The young people received a talk from Janice Tillett who is from Northampton and has herself got a Visual Impairment. She has however represented Great Britain in Swimming at previous Paralympics winning a silver medal at the Barcelona games in 1992 that she brought along to show the young people and their families.

In the afternoon session the participants played in a Goalball tournament which gave them an opportunity to try out and show off their new skills that they'd learnt in the morning.

The event then concluded with a presentation ceremony in which everyone that took part was presented with a certificate and medals for the Goalball tournaments top 3 teams.

The day was viewed as an outstanding success by all concerned and more are planned for the future along with the aim of developing a Goalball team in Northamptonshire.
