Sportsmark

School sport and PE is top of the agenda today for 371 schools across the country that have achieved a Sport England Sportsmark or Sportsmark Gold award this year.

The awards recognise commitment to physical education and sports provision both during curriculum time and for extra-curricular activities. A total of 371 schools across the country have been awarded the mark - 325 gaining Sportsmark, and a further 46 achieving the top Sportsmark Gold level.

To gain Sportsmark, schools must:

  • Offer an average of 100 minutes per week of PE within the curriculum at Key Stages 3 and 4.
  • Curriculum balance must be achieved by offering a range of sports such as dance, athletics, swimming, gymnastics, games and outdoor and adventure sports.
  • 30% of pupils for every year group should take part in extra-curricular activities.
  • Other opportunities such as recreational clubs, internal and external school competitions should be offered to pupils.
  • The school should also have good links with local sports clubs the school may use the club facilities, and the club may use the school facilities and provide club officials for matches.
  • All PE teachers must have formal qualifications in relevant PE subjects or from National Governing Bodies of Sport, and the school must ensure that teachers continually train for and gain coaching qualifications.  
  • Schools gaining Sportsmark Gold must achieve higher standards than the above, in terms of amount of time offered both within and outside of the curriculum, the amount and range of sports on offer, the participation rates of pupils in extra-curricular activities and the level of commitment between the school and local sports clubs.
