Throughout the school holidays Danes Camp Leisure Centre are offering disability swimming sessions for all customers with a physical or learning disability as well as those who may be recovering from a major operation or illness. These sessions are open to both juniors and adults and will be held on Tuesday mornings 09:30-11:45am from July 29th to August 26th 2008.

Danes Camp Operations Manager Claire McNab explained.

“We are using the summer period to trial these sessions with the hope that they will prove popular and become an integral part of our holiday programmes. The sessions are designed to offer a safe and relaxing environment where disabled people can come to swim or play with family and carers throughout the holiday period”.

The request for designated disability swimming sessions initially came from the Gladstone Road Resource Centre who already regularly utilise the leisure facilities at Danes Camp but who were keen to ensure that these opportunities were sustained throughout the busier summer months. Angela Allbright, Community Development Worker for the Gladstone Road Resource Centre commented on the developments;

“Our clients gain many benefits from swimming, with the school holidays approaching it often becomes much too busy for some of our customers to access leisure facilities. We approached Danes Camp with a request for a designated session to ensure that our clients and other people with physical impairments were able to sustain their levels of physical activity during these busy months. We are pleased that our requests have been successful and only hope that this opens up more opportunities for people with physical impairments.”

In recent years Danes Camp Leisure Centre has made significant commitments to ensuring that they are offering an accessible and inclusive facility. In 2005 they were accredited as an Inclusive Fitness Initiative (IFI) facility, which focuses on inclusive provision for disabled people in the areas of access, staff awareness training, fitness equipment, qualified fitness instructor provision and marketing. The centre offers, accessible parking bays, automatic doors, accessible changing and shower facilities, there is a deck level pool and pool wheelchairs available.
