Boccia!

The residents of Cynthia Spencer Hospice recently had the opportunity to participate in a Boccia taster session run by the Northamptonshire Sport Disability Development Officer Graeme Wilson.

Graeme was contacted by one of the residents who expressed an interest in the sport due to its inclusive nature which makes it suitable for the wide range of disabilities that people attending the hospice.

On the day of the session, following a brief explanation of the Boccia rules the participants were put into 4 teams. In these teams they started by playing games of Target Boccia which is designed to help teach, and improve basic skills, and techniques of the sport such as accuracy, and distance control. The players aim to get their balls to either hit a tall cone, or come to rest in 1 of the 4 hoops layed out around the playing area.

After a few games of Target Boccia the time came for the participants to have a go at the real thing! The 4 teams played each other in a round robin tournament putting into practice the skills they’d learnt in the previous game

If you’d like any more details about Boccia, or any other disability sport please contact Graeme Wilson at Northamptonshire Sport either by email gwilson@northamptonshire.gov.uk, or phone 01604 237953.
